India will chase a record eighth Women’s T20 Asia Cup title when they face unbeaten Sri Lanka in the final at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
Both teams have remained unbeaten in the tournament, setting up a high-stakes title clash in which India’s batting and spin strength will be tested against a Sri Lankan side that has repeatedly shown its ability to recover from difficult situations.
Shafali Verma has been one of India’s standout performers, scoring 168 runs to lead the tournament’s batting charts. Her two half-centuries and ability to handle challenging batting conditions have provided India with a strong start at the top.
Smriti Mandhana has contributed 154 runs, including a century, although two low scores have highlighted the need for greater consistency from India’s batting unit. The middle order has produced starts without consistently converting them into substantial scores, while India’s boundary-hitting has also lacked consistency.
Deepti Sharma has been central to India’s campaign with both ball and bat. Her 11 wickets make her the joint-leading wicket-taker alongside Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu. Deepti also struck 13 off six balls in the semifinal against Bangladesh to give India momentum at the finish.
Sri Lanka will draw confidence from their semifinal victory over Pakistan. Reduced to 33/4 while chasing 131, they recovered through Harshitha Samarawickrama’s 36 and Kavisha Dilhari’s 33 before Nilakshika Silva and Kaushini Nuthyangana completed the chase.
Athapaththu and Harshitha were also instrumental in Sri Lanka’s eight-wicket victory over India in the 2024 final, when both scored half-centuries.
India’s fielding remains a concern. The team has dropped nine catches in four matches — two against Thailand, three against Pakistan and four during the semifinal against Bangladesh. Against a resilient Sri Lankan side, further lapses could prove costly.
