Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab leader and Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO on Thursday accused the Congress of attempting to derive political mileage from the tragic death of Gulzar Singh and urged the party to allow the law to take its course.
ETO said Gulzar Singh’s death was deeply painful and asserted that the Punjab Government had already initiated concrete action. An SIT has been constituted to conduct a comprehensive investigation, while five persons have been booked under provisions relating to abetment to suicide and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, he said.
The minister accused Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring of trying to turn the tragedy into a political opportunity instead of allowing the bereaved family time and space to cope with their loss.
ETO also criticised Congress over its record on the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, saying Punjab had not forgotten the killings of innocent Punjabis or what he described as political protection and patronage for Congress leaders associated with the violence. He cited the conviction of former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in 1984-riot cases.
The AAP leader also questioned Warring over remarks he alleged were derogatory and colour-based references to late Dalit leader Buta Singh, who served as Union Home Minister. ETO said an FIR had been registered over those remarks and that the National Commission for Scheduled Castes had subsequently directed the Punjab Police to act.
“Where was this concern for Dalits when Raja Warring was making remarks against Sardar Buta Singh?” ETO asked, accusing Congress leaders of hypocrisy in raising the issue of Dalit dignity.
He further alleged that Rahul Gandhi and Warring were attempting to politicise Gulzar Singh’s death. ETO said Punjab had repeatedly rejected politics based on fear, communal division and exploitation of human tragedies.
“Punjab will not allow anyone to turn the death of a poor Dalit worker into a ladder for political ambition,” he said.
