Singer Pink has spoken out about her Jewish identity and the backlash she faced following a social media repost, saying she would rather be criticised for her own words than judged for something written by someone else.
In a lengthy Instagram post, Pink clarified her position on the Israel-Gaza conflict, rejected assumptions about her political views and called for the protection of innocent lives on all sides.
Pink said she had reposted another person’s post about rapper Macklemore’s performance at an Ed Sheeran concert. She acknowledged that the original post contained language she would not have chosen herself and said she reacted defensively to the criticism that followed.
“A repost isn’t a statement, and a meme isn’t a spine,” she wrote, adding that she wanted people to judge her based on what she had actually said.
Pink also addressed her Jewish identity, saying she was born Jewish and had never hidden it. She said people had drawn conclusions about her beliefs based largely on the repost and her identity.
“I don’t speak for Israel, or for any government,” Pink wrote, reaffirming views she expressed in October 2023 that Hamas is a terrorist organisation while saying Palestinians deserve a future that respects their humanity and aspirations.
She stressed that protecting innocent life must come first and said no one should celebrate the death of a child, regardless of which side they belong to. Pink, who has served as a UNICEF ambassador for children for a decade, said she had personally met children affected by conflict and had grieved for victims on both sides.
Addressing criticism from people using terms such as “Zionist” and “from the river to the sea”, Pink said she felt she had been labelled without being asked what she actually believed. She said she could accept being portrayed as a “villain” but would not accept it quietly.
Pink also appealed for Jews, Muslims, Palestinians and Israelis to feel safe and protected, stressing that concern for Jewish families should not require agreement with everything done by the Israeli government.
Her post came as Jews prepared to observe Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, at sundown. Pink said she planned to mark the occasion with her children through family traditions, including lighting candles and dipping apples in honey.
She ended by wishing her Jewish followers “Shana tova” and saying she would continue speaking in her own words.
