Gaganjot Sandhu, son of late former Haryana Agriculture Minister and four-time Pehowa MLA Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, died of a gunshot wound at a farmhouse in Pakhrali village near Ropar on Friday in a suspected case of suicide.
According to available information, Gaganjot reached the farmhouse on Friday morning and was reportedly alone when the incident occurred.
After receiving information about the incident, a team from Ropar Sadar Police Station reached the farmhouse and initiated an investigation. A forensic team was also called to examine the scene and collect evidence.
The body was subsequently shifted to a government hospital in Ropar. The post-mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted on Saturday.
Ropar Sadar SHO Sunny Khanna said the matter was under investigation and further details would emerge after the inquiry.
Police have so far not disclosed what may have led to the incident. The circumstances surrounding Gaganjot’s death are being investigated.
Gaganjot had himself been associated with grassroots public life and had served twice as sarpanch of Gumthala Garhu village in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district.
His father, Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, was a prominent Haryana politician who represented the Pehowa Assembly constituency four times and also served as Agriculture Minister in the Om Prakash Chautala-led government.
Jaswinder Singh Sandhu first entered the Haryana Assembly from Pehowa in 1991 and retained the seat in 1996. He won again in 2000 and served as Agriculture Minister during the Chautala government.
After losing the 2005 Assembly election, he returned to the Vidhan Sabha by winning Pehowa again in 2014, marking his fourth victory from the constituency.
Jaswinder Singh Sandhu died in January 2019 after suffering from liver cancer.
