Ludhiana Lions booked their place in the semifinals of the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League with a five-wicket victory over Amritsar Soormas at the I.S. Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Friday.
Chasing 177, Ludhiana needed only 62 runs to qualify because of their superior net run rate. The Lions, however, went on to complete the chase in the 19th over and secure a convincing win.
Amritsar Soormas posted 176/9 after being sent in to bat. Following the early dismissal of Sahaj Dhawan, Jashanpreet Singh and Abhay Choudhary steadied the innings with a 32-run partnership. Choudhary scored 25 off 15 balls before his dismissal triggered another collapse, with Amritsar slipping to 97/5.
Rahul Kumar and Ishmeet Singh Sandhu then revived the innings with a 64-run sixth-wicket stand. Rahul top-scored with a valuable 57 off 36 balls, helping the Soormas reach a competitive total. For Ludhiana, Kartik Chadha was among the leading bowlers with 2/31 from four overs.
The Lions also suffered early setbacks in their chase, falling to 32/2. Salil Arora and Karteek Sharma then turned the match around with an explosive 120-run partnership.
Salil smashed 70 off just 35 balls, including six sixes and four fours, while Karteek completed his half-century as the pair put Ludhiana firmly in control.
After Salil’s dismissal, Karteek continued the chase and made 56 off 40 balls. He was dismissed with Ludhiana requiring only nine runs from 19 balls. Krish Bhagat fell soon after, but the Lions comfortably completed the chase in the 19th over.
In the playoffs, Mohali Kings will face Amritsar Soormas in the first semifinal, while Ludhiana Lions will take on Jalandhar Warriors in the second semifinal on September 12.
