The ISSO Chess Games began at Adani International School in Ahmedabad on Friday, bringing together 427 young players from 102 international schools across India, with Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi joining the opening day proceedings.
The two-day competition, being held on September 11 and 12, features Under-11, Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 categories for both boys and girls.
Praggnanandhaa interacted with the participating students and encouraged them to approach the competition with confidence, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn from every game.
“It is wonderful to see so many young players coming together from schools across India and getting the opportunity to compete at this level,” Praggnanandhaa said.
He said tournaments of this nature help young players develop their skills under pressure and adapt to competitive environments. He also urged the participants to enjoy the experience, learn from each game and continue working hard to pursue their passion for chess.
Sanghavi, who also attended the Games, stressed the importance of identifying sporting talent at an early age and providing school-level platforms for young athletes to develop.
“Scouting talent early and creating the right platforms at school-level to nurture and develop that talent are both important for building India’s sporting future,” Sanghavi said.
He added that events such as the ISSO Chess Games provide young players with valuable competition, exposure and an opportunity to progress further in their sporting journey.
The tournament is aimed at giving school students exposure to high-level inter-school chess while developing strategic thinking, concentration, decision-making and resilience.
ISSO founder Aakanksha Thapak said the participation of 427 players from 102 schools reflected the growing popularity of competitive chess among school students.
She said Praggnanandhaa’s presence at the opening added special significance to the event and provided encouragement to the young participants.
The Games are supported by the Adani Group, which has been associated with ISSO and its efforts to create greater sporting opportunities for school students.
