Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has thanked India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for hosting the BRICS Summit in New Delhi and for making what he described as “valuable efforts” to strengthen cooperation among the grouping’s members.
Addressing the BRICS Business Forum in the Indian capital ahead of the summit, Pezeshkian expressed gratitude to the Indian government and people for hosting the meeting and praised Modi’s efforts to deepen BRICS cooperation.
He said the presence of representatives from the private sector, businesses and entrepreneurial community was particularly significant because they could translate the grouping’s broader cooperation agenda into tangible economic outcomes.
Pezeshkian also linked economic security with national and regional security, pointing to the continuing conflict in West Asia and its human and material costs.
“Economic security is inseparable from national and regional security,” he said, adding that pressure on a country’s trade, energy, infrastructure or financial systems can have consequences extending beyond its borders.
The Iranian President argued that BRICS’ strength should not be measured solely by the economic size of its members. Instead, he said, the grouping’s potential would become more meaningful if it could build practical networks for joint trade, investment and financing.
Pezeshkian said Iran believes economic resilience requires diversification of trade partners, financing sources and payment channels. Referring to the sanctions faced by Tehran, he said recent military developments had made those pressures particularly difficult and dangerous for Iran.
He called for BRICS to create an environment where legitimate trade between member countries cannot be disrupted through the monopolisation of financial instruments or technology.
To boost intra-BRICS trade, Pezeshkian proposed gradually integrating trade infrastructure through measures such as digitalisation, customs integration, trade facilitation, reducing regulatory and administrative barriers, developing markets and encouraging joint private-sector investment.
According to Iran’s Mehr news agency, Pezeshkian also proposed establishing a BRICS joint reinsurance company with an initial capital of $10 billion to cover risks associated with major infrastructure and energy projects.
He further urged BRICS countries to play a greater role in developing artificial intelligence and shaping digital-economy standards rather than remaining merely consumers of technology. He also stressed the need to strengthen cybersecurity for critical infrastructure.
