Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has strongly objected to the alleged “Mr. Singh” posters issued by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), alleging that they racially profile Sikhs and target their religious identity.
Randhawa said portraying the Sikh community under a cloud of suspicion was unacceptable, particularly given its global reputation for hard work, honesty and bravery. He said the Sikh community has consistently promoted human service, peace and brotherhood across the world, and any attempt to associate its identity with prejudice would be strongly opposed.
He also expressed concern over the reported rise in anti-Sikh hate crime incidents in the United States. Citing available data, Randhawa said 177 anti-Sikh hate crime incidents were recorded in 2025, compared with 142 in 2024, describing the increase as a serious indication of growing intolerance.
According to Randhawa, the reported posters could further deepen concerns within the Sikh community at a time when incidents of hate are already a matter of concern.
Taking aim at the Modi government, Randhawa said the Centre could not restrict itself to taking credit for the achievements of the Indian diaspora. He maintained that whenever the dignity and honour of Indians, particularly Sikhs, are challenged abroad, the government has a responsibility to stand firmly with them. He demanded an immediate response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Randhawa also urged External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to take up the matter promptly with the US administration and seek concrete measures to protect the religious identity and dignity of Sikhs.
He said singling out the identity of a particular community as a symbol of suspicion in the name of national security was contrary to democratic values and the spirit of human rights.
