Music composer Amaal Mallik has opened up about the unpredictable journey of songs, saying he believes every track has its own timeline and that several factors determine whether it connects with listeners immediately or finds an audience years later.
Amaal, who has composed ‘Yeh Awarapan’ for the upcoming Emraan Hashmi-starrer ‘Awarapan 2’, spoke to IANS during the film’s promotional activities in Mumbai.
Reflecting on songs from his own repertoire that took time to gain recognition, the composer said their success depends on a combination of circumstances, including the film, the actor featured in the song, its visual presentation and the promotional strategy behind it.
“I have many such songs. I believe that there is a timeline for every song. There is also fate. It also depends on the mood, energy, and with whom you make it,” he said.
Amaal noted that music in India is closely linked to visuals, meaning the actor appearing in a song and the way it is presented can influence its reception.
He also stressed that making a good song is no longer enough to guarantee immediate success in an environment crowded with digital content.
“Today is not a time that you make a very good song, and it will be seen,” he said, pointing out that some tracks gain traction through reels, others through streaming platforms, while some follow an entirely different path.
According to Amaal, effective positioning is essential for a song to stand out amid the vast amount of content competing for the audience’s attention.
He acknowledged that it can be disappointing when a song does not perform as expected, but said he tries not to dwell on it for too long.
“Sometimes the songs work out, sometimes they don’t. And I feel bad for two days, that it didn’t happen. You keep looking, that maybe because of this, because of that. But if you think too much, I move to the next song,” he said.
