Singer-actress Kylie Minogue has given the latest social media trend celebrating the 1980s a distinctly authentic twist, choosing to share a real photograph from the decade rather than an AI-generated recreation.
Minogue took to Instagram on Sunday to post a throwback image from an actual 1980s film set. The photograph shows the singer sitting in a make-up chair with a drink in hand while the camera crew prepares for a take.
“Seeing lots of 80s on my feed… here’s one from the actual 80s on set. I Should Be So Lucky. Awwww,” she captioned the post.
The picture drew praise from followers, many of whom applauded Minogue for opting for a genuine archival photograph amid the growing popularity of AI-generated content.
One user commented that Kylie had effectively said there was “no need for AI”, while another praised her for sharing an actual photograph from the 1980s. Others thanked her for taking an anti-AI stance and said they preferred the authentic image to what they described as “AI slop”.
The latest social media trend involves transforming real photographs with AI-generated 1980s-inspired elements, including neon aesthetics, high-fashion styling and synth-pop visuals.
The trend has also prompted concerns about the environmental impact of increased AI use. AI data centres require substantial amounts of energy and water for cooling, and a surge in image-generation requests can add to resource consumption.
Minogue, who rose to international fame through both music and acting, continues to maintain a strong connection with her 1980s roots, when she became one of the era’s prominent pop stars.
