An old international interview of actress Aishwarya Rai has resurfaced online, in which she spoke about her decision to live with her parents despite being a highly successful and independent woman.
During the interaction, Rai discussed the cultural difference between India and the United States, particularly the practice of young adults moving out of their parents’ homes. She said she found the concept difficult to understand and asked whether leaving home was considered a social expectation in American society.
When told that a 30-year-old American woman with a successful career and a good income would generally not be living with her parents, Rai explained that her own profession already required her to spend considerable time away from her family.
“By virtue of my job, I’m traveling out. You get to spend very little time with your family. We hardly get to meet each other, except in the one odd day we really get to spend time, have dinner together. And that’s rare, and we cherish it,” she said.
Asked whether she considered herself an independent woman, Rai responded affirmatively but questioned the idea that independence required living separately from one’s family.
“Yes, yes. And I don’t see any reason why moving away from your family is a statement of independence,” she said.
Rai, one of India’s most recognised actresses and global cultural figures, won the Miss World title in 1994 and later made her acting debut with the Tamil film Iruvar. She went on to build a successful career in Indian cinema, while her appearances at the Cannes Film Festival further strengthened her international profile.
Married to actor Abhishek Bachchan, Rai has remained a prominent figure in Indian cinema and fashion, known for her screen presence and enduring global appeal.
