Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit and is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed Putin’s arrival in a post on X, welcoming the Russian leader and describing India-Russia relations as a “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership”. Putin was received at the airport by Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh.
Putin’s visit comes amid continued high-level engagement between India and Russia and follows his meeting with Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek last week.
During that meeting, Modi urged Putin to move from an “endless war” towards the “end of war” in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“We have to move from a situation of ‘endless war’ to ‘end of war’… It is humanity’s wish that the end of this war happens as soon as possible,” Modi had said.
The upcoming meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the two leaders to review progress in bilateral ties and discuss strategic and global issues. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had said ahead of Putin’s visit that the Russian President would brief Modi on the latest developments in the Ukraine conflict while discussing bilateral relations and international affairs.
Defence cooperation is also expected to feature prominently in the talks, including ongoing and prospective projects between the two countries.
India, which is chairing BRICS in 2026, will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. The summit will bring together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries, along with outreach invitees.
According to the MEA, leaders will discuss ways to strengthen intra-BRICS cooperation on shared priorities and exchange views on global and regional issues of mutual importance.
