In a significant breakthrough against transnational organised crime, Punjab Police has secured the extradition of fugitive criminal Amritpal Singh alias Amrit Dalam, an alleged key operative of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, from the Republic of Moldova.
According to Punjab Police, this is the first extradition secured by the state police from a European country.
Amritpal Singh is wanted in Punjab in multiple criminal cases involving allegations of murder, attempt to murder and offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Arms Act and narcotics laws.
The extradition follows a six-month intelligence-led international operation, codenamed Operation Eastern Reach, undertaken to locate the fugitive and facilitate his return to India.
Punjab Police said the operation involved sustained surveillance and coordination between its Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC), along with central agencies and international authorities.
The operation culminated in Amritpal Singh being extradited from Moldova to face legal proceedings in India in the cases registered against him.
Punjab Director General of Police commended the AGTF and OFTEC teams for their efforts in pursuing the fugitive across international borders.
Punjab Police also acknowledged the cooperation extended by authorities in Moldova and Azerbaijan as well as the International Police Cooperation Unit of the CBI (IPCU-CBI), Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs and other central agencies involved in the extradition process.
The development assumes significance as Punjab Police has increasingly been pursuing accused persons and alleged gang operatives who have moved abroad after being wanted in criminal cases in the state.
The police maintained that the successful extradition demonstrated its resolve to pursue wanted criminals beyond India’s borders and bring them back to face proceedings under the law.
