Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has condemned an official US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) social media post depicting a man identified as “Mr. Singh” in a deportation-themed graphic, calling it racist and warning that such messaging could fuel xenophobia against the Sikh and South Asian communities.
According to a statement from Krishnamoorthi’s office, the Transformers-style graphic portrayed “Mr. Singh” as a villain, told him to “get off our roads” and warned him to “self-deport or find out”.
“Our government should never use its power to demonize people or suggest that their faith, heritage, or identity means they do not belong here,” Krishnamoorthi said.
The Illinois Democrat said the use of the surname was particularly concerning because Singh is one of the most widely recognised Sikh surnames and is shared by more than 160,000 people in the United States.
“When the government demonizes a name carried by so many Sikh families, it fuels xenophobia and casts suspicion on an entire community,” he said.
Krishnamoorthi added that Sikh and South Asian Americans “are as American as anyone” and said there should be no place for hatred against communities based on their identity or heritage.
The controversy comes as the Trump administration intensifies immigration enforcement and uses official social media platforms to promote its deportation policies.
Krishnamoorthi, who was born in New Delhi and raised in the United States, represents an Illinois congressional district with a substantial immigrant population. He has frequently spoken on issues affecting Indian-American, Sikh and other South Asian communities.
