Actor Karthi’s much-awaited spy thriller Sardar 2, directed by P S Mithran, has received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with a U/A certificate.
The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on September 10.
Production house Prince Pictures announced the certification on social media, sharing the update with the message, “Stillness before the Storm. #Sardar2 certified with U/A.”
The sequel has generated considerable interest, particularly because of its focus on health and hygiene. Speaking at the film’s trailer launch, Karthi said the film addresses an issue that could make audiences reconsider everyday practices, including drinking water from plastic bottles.
“You might have continued the practice of drinking water from plastic water bottles, but after watching this film, you won’t be able to ignore the point it looks to make,” Karthi said, adding that the film deals with a truth related to health that could leave viewers shaken.
The first instalment, Sardar, explored the commercialisation of water and went on to become a major box-office success. With Sardar 2, Mithran has turned his attention towards issues concerning health and hygiene.
Karthi praised Mithran’s sincerity in addressing the subject and expressed hope that the film reaches a wide audience, noting that viewers are also willing to embrace films dealing with such themes.
The film’s shoot concluded in Bangkok in June 2025 after an extensive schedule. The makers had earlier released a promotional video indicating that Karthi’s character would be sent on a spy mission to Cambodia. Mithran subsequently revealed that the story initially moves to Cambodia before shifting to China.
Sardar 2 features Malavika Mohanan alongside Karthi. George Williams is the cinematographer, while Sam C S has composed the music. Editing is by Vijay Velukutty, with art direction by MSP Madhavan and B. Sekar.
The screenplay has been written by Rathna Kumar, Aashameera Aiyappan and Vignesh Muniyand. Stunt choreography is by Dhilip Subbarayan and Chethan D’Souza.
