Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Thursday said her nephew and party national convenor Akash Anand was “not mature enough” to handle major responsibilities, signalling a possible change in his role ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections next year.
Addressing a meeting of the BSP national committee at the party’s state unit office, Mayawati said Akash Anand would continue working within the organisation but would not be given significant responsibilities until he gained greater political maturity.
“I have allowed Mr Akash Anand to work in the party, a fact that is before you all. However, Mr Akash Anand still needs to mature further in this matter. Until then, it would not be appropriate to give him significant party responsibilities,” she said.
Although Mayawati did not explicitly announce his removal as national convenor, her remarks indicate that Akash Anand may no longer be entrusted with a major leadership role during the BSP’s campaign for the upcoming UP Assembly elections.
The development comes days after the BSP launched its electoral campaign from Hathras last month, with Akash Anand taking a prominent role in the party’s preparations.
Mayawati said the immediate priority was to protect the party and strengthen its connect with people while countering attempts by opponents to weaken the organisation through alleged tactics including bribery, coercion and discrimination.
Following Mayawati’s remarks, Akash Anand changed the description on his X profile to “BSP worker”. He had previously identified himself as the party’s national convenor, a development that left his supporters disappointed.
Akash Anand was appointed BSP national convenor in August 2025, a move that positioned him as the party’s de facto second-in-command and indicated his emergence as Mayawati’s political successor.
At the time, Mayawati had said Akash Anand would play an important role in reviving the BSP’s electoral prospects in Uttar Pradesh and reconnecting the party with young voters who had been moving towards other political options.
Mayawati’s latest remarks, however, suggest that the BSP chief wants Akash Anand to gain more political experience before being entrusted with major organisational or electoral responsibilities.
