Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sisters were once again denied permission to meet him at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, according to local media reports. Family members of his wife, Bushra Bibi, were also reportedly not allowed to meet her.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) criticised the jail authorities, alleging that the denial of family meetings amounted to a serious violation of orders issued by the Supreme Court and Islamabad High Court.
The party said the refusal to allow meetings despite judicial directions raised concerns over compliance with orders of the superior judiciary. It urged prison authorities to follow the court directions and facilitate meetings between Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi and their family members in accordance with the law.
PTI lawyer Awais Younas Chaudhry said Imran Khan’s three sisters waited at Adiala Jail from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday but were not permitted to meet him, according to Dawn.
The development comes days after the Supreme Court rejected a second application filed by one of Imran Khan’s sisters seeking an early hearing of a contempt petition over the alleged non-implementation of the court’s August 18 order.
On August 18, the Supreme Court had directed that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment and ordered that family members be allowed to meet him.
However, authorities took Khan to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on August 21 for treatment and subsequently returned him to Adiala Jail after doctors reportedly declared him “medically fit”, according to The Express Tribune.
Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 following convictions that his party has described as politically motivated. Since his removal as Prime Minister through a no-confidence vote in 2022, he has faced several legal cases, including those relating to state gifts and an unlawful marriage case.
