The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday approached Delhi Police seeking registration of an FIR against Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP) and unidentified individuals, organisations and social media accounts over alleged “false, malicious, defamatory and politically motivated propaganda” against BJP national president Nitin Nabin.
The complaint was submitted to Central Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh. The BJP alleged that false claims were circulated on social media suggesting that Nabin had consumed non-vegetarian food during his visit to Andhra Pradesh in the Hindu holy month of Sawan.
Delhi BJP General Secretary Vishnu Mittal said the controversy arose after a vegetarian dish, jackfruit (kathal), was allegedly presented as non-vegetarian food in social media posts.
“It is an extremely shameful act by the Congress, along with the Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party, and other opposition parties,” Mittal told IANS.
He said the BJP had identified around 25 social media accounts that allegedly promoted the claim and submitted their details to the police, seeking strict action.
BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri accused Congress Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi of directing party workers and leaders to spread misinformation against BJP leaders through social media and circulate fake videos.
“Recently, a fake video was posted by Congress leaders regarding our party’s National President, respected Nitin Nabin ji,” Bidhuri said after meeting the DCP along with a BJP delegation that included Mittal and Legal Cell head Sanket Gupta, a senior High Court advocate.
The BJP demanded a detailed investigation into the alleged circulation of the video and sought a probe into whether any foreign entities were involved and the alleged source of funding behind the campaign.
Bidhuri said the DCP had assured the delegation that action would be taken in accordance with the law.
