Three people were killed and six others seriously injured after four motorcycles collided in Roorkee in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district, officials said on Saturday.
The accident occurred around 10.30 p.m. on Friday on Kaliyar Road in Roorkee. According to officials, three youths died at the spot, while six others sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital.
All four motorcycles were badly damaged in the collision.
After receiving information about the accident, personnel from Kaliyar and Civil Lines police stations reached the spot. With the help of local residents, the injured were taken by ambulance to Roorkee Civil Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
The deceased were identified as Ayan, 18, of Manglaur in Haridwar district, and Raju, 24, and Rajiv, 18, both residents of Piran Kaliyar.
Among the injured, Aditya Chandra, 25, of Khanjarpur, was referred to AIIMS for further treatment. The remaining injured are being treated at Roorkee Civil Hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, the first two motorcycles collided head-on, throwing the riders onto the road. Two other motorcycles then collided with the damaged bikes and people who had fallen on the road.
Local residents alerted the police and ambulance services and helped the injured before emergency teams arrived.
Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examinations and informed the families of the deceased. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.
The incident comes days after another fatal road accident in Uttarakhand. On August 19, four people were killed and three others seriously injured when a pick-up truck collided with a car near Manimai Temple in Doiwala. The driver of the pick-up truck reportedly fled the scene and police are working to trace him.
