A 19-year-old third-year BSc Nursing student was found dead in her hostel room in Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar area, prompting police to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The student, who was a resident of Najafgarh, was allegedly found hanging in her hostel room on Friday by fellow students. She was taken to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where authorities were subsequently informed about the incident.
Personnel from Rajinder Nagar Police Station reached the hostel after receiving the information and initiated legal proceedings. A Crime Team was also called to examine the scene and collect evidence.
Police are investigating the events preceding the student’s death and are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The precise reason for her death has not yet been determined.
The administration of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said it was cooperating fully with the investigating authorities.
“The hospital authorities are extending full cooperation to the investigating agencies, and all relevant facts, including the circumstances leading up to the incident, are being examined,” the hospital said in a statement.
The hospital added that it would provide any information sought by the authorities and share further details once the investigation establishes the facts.
The incident comes amid wider concerns over student deaths by suicide in India. National Crime Records Bureau data showed that 14,488 student suicides were reported across the country in 2024, compared with 8,068 in 2014.
The 2024 figure translates to an average of about 40 student suicides a day, underscoring concerns over the pressures and challenges faced by young people.
Police are continuing their investigation into the Delhi case.
