Actor Anil Kapoor has welcomed the theatrical return of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s “1942: A Love Story”, urging audiences to experience the restored classic for its iconic music, nostalgia and enduring appeal.
The film, which originally released 32 years ago, returned to cinemas on August 21 in an 8K-restored version featuring remastered Dolby 5.1 sound.
Sharing a reel from a screening of the restored film on Instagram, Anil thanked audiences who attended the event and wrote, “Thank you to everyone who came and made the evening so special.”
“1942: A Love Story is back on the big screen, remastered and looking better than ever. Come for the songs. Stay for the nostalgia. And experience the magic of the film all over again,” he added.
The period romance stars Anil Kapoor, Manisha Koirala and Jackie Shroff, with Danny Denzongpa, Anupam Kher, Pran and Brian Glover in supporting roles.
Set against the backdrop of India’s revolutionary movement, the film follows Naren (Anil Kapoor) and Rajjo (Manisha Koirala), whose romance is challenged by their contrasting family backgrounds and the political upheaval of the period.
The film’s central plot has been reported to have drawn inspiration from the 1992 Kannada film “Mysore Mallige”, which was itself based on K. S. Narasimhaswamy’s 1942 work of the same name.
“1942: A Love Story” featured the final film score of legendary composer R.D. Burman, who died before the movie’s release. Although the film received critical appreciation for its performances, music, cinematography and themes, it did not initially make a strong impact commercially and faced criticism over its story, screenplay and pacing. It subsequently developed a cult following.
On the work front, Anil Kapoor was last seen in Shiv Rawail’s “Alpha”, the seventh instalment of the YRF Spy Universe and its first female-led film, starring Alia Bhatt, Sharvari and Bobby Deol.
