The controversy over the alleged use of pellet guns by Delhi Police during a student protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20 intensified on Friday, with Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi visiting Parliament Street Police Station along with the alleged pellet-gun victim and others.
Congress said Gandhi visited the police station to press for registration of an FIR over the alleged firing on protesting students. Sources said he met the Deputy Commissioner of Police and questioned why a case had not been registered over the incident.
Gandhi also sought information on who ordered the lathi-charge and alleged pellet firing, and why no case had been registered despite the complaint involving what the Congress described as a cognisable offence.
The Congress leader had first gone to Mandir Marg Police Station to meet the DCP before proceeding to Parliament Street Police Station, which has jurisdiction over Jantar Mantar.
The Congress has accused the Centre and Delhi Police of using excessive force against students protesting over alleged examination paper leaks. Gandhi has repeatedly raised the alleged use of pellet guns and the treatment of students during the protests.
The development comes a day before Gandhi is scheduled to address the third edition of the Congress’ “Chhatron Ki Goonj” campaign in Pune on August 22. He is expected to target the government over what the party describes as the use of “brute” force against students.
The alleged pellet-gun victim had earlier shared a platform with Gandhi, who displayed the young man’s pellet injuries before the media and questioned who had ordered the police action.
The Congress has also alleged that women students faced harassment by police personnel during the protests.
According to the party, the alleged victim, Sahil Lochav, submitted a written complaint to Delhi Police with his lawyers on August 14 but was not given an I/O number or acknowledgement. The party said the matter was pursued again through email and telephone on August 17, but the complainant allegedly received no case details.
“Now, LoP Rahul Gandhi ji went along with the victim to insist,” the Congress said, alleging that the police again did not provide the case officer or I/O number.
Delhi Police has not been cited in the source as issuing a response to the Congress allegations.
