A State Bank of India employee allegedly shot dead his estranged wife outside her workplace in Lucknow on Thursday before returning home and killing his sister and subsequently dying by suicide, sending shockwaves across the city.
The accused, identified as 38-year-old Manas Vajpayee, allegedly called his wife, Divya Mishra, outside the ICICI Bank branch in Gomti Nagar where she worked. After speaking with her for a few minutes, he allegedly opened fire and fled.
Mishra was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.
Police said the couple had been married for around 12 years but had been living separately for more than a year. Mishra had also reportedly filed for divorce last year.
DCP East Dr Diksha Sharma said police initially received information about a woman being shot in the Gomti Nagar police station area. While officers were responding, another alert was received about a man who had allegedly shot his sister and then died by suicide.
Police subsequently established that the man was Vajpayee, the same person allegedly involved in the shooting of Mishra.
According to police, Vajpayee then shot his 28-year-old sister, Shiva Vajpayee, at their residence before turning the weapon on himself. Shiva was reportedly facing mental health-related issues. Three firearms were recovered from the house.
Police are also examining a WhatsApp status allegedly posted by Vajpayee before his death, in which he claimed to have killed his wife and sister and referred to alleged infidelity.
A shopkeeper near Vajpayee’s residence told police that the accused returned home around 12.30 p.m., appearing panicked and sweating heavily. He allegedly entered the house and played the Hanuman Chalisa.
The shopkeeper later noticed the WhatsApp status and went inside the house, where Vajpayee was allegedly found dead.
Following the initial shooting, Mishra’s sister Pragya Mishra posted on social media that she had been informed that her sister had been shot and taken to Lohia Hospital. She also tagged the Uttar Pradesh Police and appealed for prayers.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the two killings and the subsequent suicide.
