Actress Divya Dutta says the emotional ambiguity and psychological depth of her upcoming relationship drama Tum Rahe Na Tum were key reasons she chose the project, which stars Jimmy Shergill alongside her.
Directed by Prem Prakash Modi, the film is adapted from Swedish playwright August Strindberg’s acclaimed play The Father. It relocates the emotional and psychological concerns of the classic to an intimate Indian family setting, examining how love, control, insecurity, parental expectations, toxic masculinity and ego can influence relationships.
Dutta said the film appealed to her because its characters cannot be easily classified as either right or wrong.
“What attracted me to the film was that nobody in this family is completely innocent or completely guilty. It is a very human, uncomfortable and layered story, and that complexity is what made the film particularly compelling for me,” she said.
Modi said his intention was to explore the emotional dynamics within an Indian family while addressing experiences that can resonate across cultures.
“Tum Rahe Na Tum is an intimate exploration of relationships and the emotional spaces people inhabit within a family. I wanted to look at what happens when love, expectations, insecurity, ego and ideas of masculinity begin to affect the way people see each other. The film is rooted in a very Indian family setting, but the emotions are universal,” he said.
The director praised both lead actors for bringing contrasting qualities and emotional depth to their respective roles. He said Shergill’s ability to make a complicated character feel authentic made him suited to the part, while Dutta’s capacity to convey strength, vulnerability and complexity simultaneously strengthened the film’s central relationship.
“I felt that the combination of Jimmy and Divya would bring exactly the kind of layered, lived-in relationship that the film demands. Both Jimmy and Divya are stepping into characters and emotional spaces that audiences haven’t seen them explore before,” Modi added.
Shergill said he was drawn to the project because of the way it examines the complexities of human relationships.
“Tum Rahe Na Tum immediately drew me in because of how deeply human and emotionally complex it is. It is the kind of story that makes you question what you see, what you believe and how people can experience the same relationship very differently,” he said.
The film is produced by Vinni Chawla and Sonu Katyal under the banner Fanatically Filmi Pvt. Ltd.
The cast also includes Harsh Chhaya, Zarina Wahab and Rajesh Jais in important roles.
