A Gandhinagar court has convicted two people in a case involving the interstate trafficking of 198.90 grams of mephedrone from Madhya Pradesh to Gujarat, with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) securing prison terms of 20 years and 10 years for the accused.
The two convicts, Shahida Bibi alias Saida Bee and Radheshyam Solanki, were found guilty on August 19 under Sections 8(c), 22(c) and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The case was investigated by the NCB’s Ahmedabad Zonal Unit after the agency received specific intelligence about the transportation of the psychotropic substance.
According to the NCB, its officers intercepted an Ashok Travels bus travelling from Jaora-Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh towards Ahmedabad on February 21, 2023. The bus was stopped at Chandrala Police Naka on NH-48 in Gandhinagar, where 198.90 grams of mephedrone was recovered from Shahida Bibi and Solanki, who were travelling on the vehicle.
The investigation found that the two were involved in a conspiracy to transport a commercial quantity of mephedrone across state borders for illegal distribution.
The NCB said Shahida Bibi, a resident of Sujapur in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district, was involved in the transportation and distribution of mephedrone in Ahmedabad. Solanki, a resident of Jaora in Ratlam district and the bus driver, allegedly acted as a courier for moving the drug from Jaora to Ahmedabad.
The agency said the seized substance was in the conscious possession of both accused.
The NCB filed its complaint before the District and Sessions Court on August 17, 2023.
The court sentenced Shahida Bibi to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh. Solanki was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 1 lakh.
The NCB said the conviction followed a detailed trial and highlighted the prosecution of an interstate narcotics trafficking network using road transport to move mephedrone into Gujarat.
