Pakistan on Wednesday summoned the US Chargé d’Affaires in Islamabad and lodged a formal protest over remarks by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor during his recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad conveyed a “strong demarche” over what it described as Gor’s “factually incorrect” remarks regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir. The development was also reported by multiple outlets following Gor’s first visit to Srinagar.
Pakistan specifically rejected Gor’s description of Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India”. During his visit to Srinagar, Gor had also indicated that the United States could reconsider its travel advisory for the Union Territory in view of improved security conditions.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry reiterated Islamabad’s position that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally disputed territory whose final status should be determined in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
It said Gor’s remarks during his visit to what Pakistan refers to as “Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir” were contrary to what Islamabad described as established facts and international positions.
The ministry further claimed that the statement was inconsistent with what it called the long-standing US position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and with Washington’s stated commitment to international law and the UN Charter.
Pakistan also referred to US President Donald Trump’s earlier offer to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Jammu and Kashmir issue, and urged Washington to ensure that its public statements remained consistent with what Islamabad described as the disputed status of the territory.
The diplomatic protest comes after Gor, during his Srinagar visit, described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India” and said the US would consider revising its travel advisory for the region.
India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral and inalienable parts of the country.
The latest exchange highlights the continuing sensitivity surrounding international statements on Jammu and Kashmir, with India and Pakistan maintaining sharply divergent positions on the territory.
