Two people, including a two-and-a-half-year-old child, were killed and six others injured after a fire broke out in a residential building in Mumbai’s Vile Parle West, officials said on Wednesday.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade received the fire call at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday. The blaze, initially classified as Level-1, was upgraded to Level-2 at around 10:16 p.m. as it spread through the 11th floor of the 11-storey building.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control at around 1 a.m. Eight fire tenders and specialised equipment were deployed during the operation.
Divisional Fire Officer R.V. Bhosle said the fire broke out in a residential flat on the 11th floor and spread through electrical wiring, an air-conditioning unit and household items, including furniture and kitchen articles, in two flats on the floor.
A total of eight people were injured and taken to hospitals. Six were shifted to Nanavati Hospital, while two were taken to Cooper Hospital.
According to Nanavati Hospital officials, two of the six people brought there were declared dead on arrival, while four others were reported to be stable.
The deceased were identified as 23-year-old Ankita and two-and-a-half-year-old Abir.
At Cooper Hospital, fireman Manoj Sonavane and Shivam Dwivedi were treated and discharged, according to the hospital’s latest bulletin.
The four injured persons admitted to Nanavati Hospital were identified as Parth, 32, Hiren, 64, Yashasvi and Abhishek. They are reported to be in stable condition.
A firefighter was also injured during the rescue and firefighting operation.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire. An investigation is underway to establish how the blaze started and why it spread rapidly across the floor.
