The death toll from a school shooting in Thailand’s Nonthaburi province has risen to nine after a 12-year-old girl died in hospital, authorities said on Saturday.
The provincial public relations department, citing the Ministry of Public Health, said that as of 4 p.m. local time, 14 people remained hospitalised following Friday’s shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district, on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok.
The girl, who was a student at the school, died after being taken to hospital. The school expressed condolences following her death.
Police have summoned several students and teachers for questioning as investigators seek to establish the 14-year-old alleged gunman’s motive and determine how he obtained the ammunition. Police are expected to announce preliminary findings at a press conference on Sunday.
The shooting was reported at around 10 a.m. on Friday after the gunman allegedly opened fire inside the school. A witness said the suspect was wearing a purple tracksuit and fired dozens of rounds. Media footage showed repeated gunshots being heard across the school campus.
A handgun was recovered from the scene. Initial information indicated that the weapon belonged to the alleged shooter’s grandfather. Police also found a large quantity of ammunition in the suspect’s bag.
Earlier reports had put the death toll at eight, including the alleged gunman and his grandparents. The latest fatality has raised the toll to nine.
Investigators are also examining the suspect’s digital activity. Thai media reported that police found searches and material relating to an American school shooting on his computer.
A friend of the alleged shooter reportedly told investigators that the teenager had been under considerable pressure in recent weeks and had prepared extensively before the attack. The friend also said the suspect had posted photographs of the weapon allegedly used in the shooting on social media.
The investigation into the motive, weapon and ammunition supply remains underway.
