Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta has backed Kuldeep Yadav’s inclusion in the playing XI for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, saying the wrist-spinner will be a crucial asset in spin-friendly conditions.
India are set to play a two-match Test series in Sri Lanka from August 15 to 29, with the squad featuring a strong spin contingent comprising Kuldeep, Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain. Washington Sundar will miss the opening Test due to a hamstring injury.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Dasgupta said Kuldeep’s experience and ability make him a key selection for the tour.
“Kuldeep has to be there. I am talking about four spinners, and you will definitely play with three spinners,” Dasgupta said, adding that the left-arm wrist-spinner’s absence from the England ODI series was a separate issue.
Kuldeep has taken 79 wickets in 18 Test matches and remains one of India’s most effective attacking options in conditions that assist spin.
Dasgupta said the Indian squad selection was largely expected, considering the conditions in Sri Lanka, where teams often rely heavily on spinners.
“I think there might be an opportunity where you can play with four spinners. This can also happen and has happened in the past in Tests in Sri Lanka,” he said.
Discussing India’s ongoing Test transition, Dasgupta suggested that the team should not focus solely on qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final and instead concentrate on rebuilding a dominant side for future cycles.
India are currently fifth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 48.15.
Dasgupta said the team should prioritise long-term development and aim to recreate the dominance India showed between 2020 and 2021, when they achieved major overseas Test victories.
He added that the upcoming schedule, featuring challenging conditions in Sri Lanka, New Zealand and a home series against Australia, provides an ideal opportunity to develop a stronger Test unit.
“This is a great opportunity if you are grooming someone or a team. Then, you might not get a better variety than this,” he said.
