Reigning World Champion D Gukesh will defend his title against Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov in the FIDE World Chess Championship Match 2026, scheduled to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 25 to December 15.
The announcement was made by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) on Tuesday.
The championship will feature 14 classical games, with the first player to reach 7.5 points being declared the winner. If the scores are level after all 14 games, the title will be decided through tie-breaks.
The contest will create history as the youngest World Chess Championship match ever, with both Gukesh and Sindarov set to be 20 years old when the event begins.
Gukesh earned the world title in December 2024 after defeating China’s Ding Liren in Singapore, becoming the youngest World Chess Champion in history and only the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand, to win the prestigious crown.
Sindarov secured his place in the title match by winning the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 in Cyprus after also claiming the FIDE World Cup in 2025.
Announcing Geneva as the host city, FIDE Interim President and former World Champion Viswanathan Anand said several countries, including India, the United States and Cyprus, had submitted bids to stage the championship before the governing body opted for a neutral venue.
“After carefully considering all the proposals, FIDE has decided to stage the match on neutral soil and bring it to Geneva,” Anand said, expressing confidence that the event would attract global attention.
Swiss Chess Federation President André Vögtlin welcomed the decision, describing the championship as a landmark moment for chess in Switzerland and an opportunity to inspire greater public interest in the sport.
The Geneva showdown will pit two of the brightest stars of world chess against each other in a battle for the sport’s biggest prize.
