Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday demanded accountability from the government over the alleged use of pellet guns and AK-47 rifles against students protesting examination irregularities, asking who authorised such action against demonstrators.
Participating in the Lok Sabha debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Priyanka Gandhi said students across the country had lost faith in the examination system and were seeking transparency and accountability rather than confrontation.
She said the youth were increasingly disillusioned as “money is overshadowing merit” and urged the government to undertake meaningful reforms to restore confidence in the system.
Referring to the alleged NEET paper leak controversy and the subsequent student protests, Priyanka Gandhi alleged that students demanding action against those responsible for examination irregularities were instead met with force.
“The examination system has itself failed,” she said, alleging that more than 152 examination paper leaks over the past decade had adversely affected crores of students while no examination mafia had been brought to justice.
The Congress leader also accused the government of weakening sectors capable of generating employment and said cosmetic efforts to change public perception would not address the deep-rooted concerns of students. She remarked that restoring the confidence of young people would require decisive action against those responsible for examination-related irregularities.
Expressing concern over the treatment of protesting students, Priyanka Gandhi recounted her interaction with the mother of a girl allegedly injured during police action. She said the woman was determined to continue her fight despite refusing outside assistance.
Questioning the government’s handling of the protests, Priyanka Gandhi asked why such force was used against students.
“Are students terrorists? What was the need to use pellet guns and AK-47 against them? The Congress and the entire nation want to know who gave the order to use these guns against students,” she said.
She also referred to the welcome accorded to former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the Parliament premises shortly after his resignation, saying symbolic gestures would not restore public confidence in the examination system.
Earlier in the debate, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said the recent student movement over examination irregularities had compelled the Centre to respond to several of the protesters’ demands, describing it as evidence of the youth’s ability to influence public policy.
