Jammu and Kashmir cricketer Majid Ah Magray has been appointed captain of the Indian Mixed Disability Cricket Team for the upcoming seven-match IT20 series against England, the Differently Abled Cricket Council of India (DCCI) announced on Monday.
Sai Akash Saivamani has been named vice-captain of the 16-member squad that will represent India in the series scheduled from August 5 to 19 across England.
India will open the campaign with the first two matches at OurCoop County Ground in Derby on August 5 and August 7. The third IT20 will be played at Uptonsteel Grace Road, Leicester, on August 9.
The fourth match is scheduled at County Ground, Hove, on August 12, followed by the fifth and sixth games at Arundel on August 15 and August 16. The series will conclude with the final IT20 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on August 19. All matches will begin at 2:30 pm local time.
DCCI Secretary Ravi Kant Chauhan described Magray’s appointment as a significant moment for Jammu and Kashmir and the differently abled cricket community.
“Majid Magray’s appointment as captain is a proud moment not only for Jammu & Kashmir but for the entire differently abled cricket fraternity. His leadership will inspire many aspiring cricketers from the region to pursue the sport with greater confidence and determination,” Chauhan said.
DCCI Vice President Sumit Jain wished the team and support staff success for the tour and expressed hope that their performances would encourage more differently abled players to take up cricket.
The Indian squad is currently undergoing a preparatory training camp at Chhawla near Dwarka in New Delhi ahead of the England series.
Former Rajasthan Ranji captain Rohit Jhalani will lead the support staff as head coach. He will be assisted by coach Dev Dutt, while Rohit Sharma has been appointed fielding coach. Ramswaroop Saini will serve as the Strength and Conditioning Coach, with Mayank Pushkar accompanying the team as physiotherapist.
Jammu and Kashmir has three representatives in the squad — captain Majid Ah Magray, Rizwan Altaf Bhat and Hilal Ahmad Wani. Tamil Nadu players include vice-captain Sai Akash Saivamani and Sudarsun Elangovan.
The squad also features Kuldeep Singh and Tarun from Haryana, Rajesh Irappa Kannur and Shiva Shankara Guntiganapalli Subbarayappa from Karnataka, along with players from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal.
