Nine passengers, including a woman, were charred to death after a massive fire broke out in a double-decker bus on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida on Thursday, officials said.
The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Jewar police station, triggering panic among passengers travelling on the bus. More than 30 people were reportedly on board when the vehicle suddenly caught fire.
As flames rapidly engulfed the bus, several passengers managed to escape by breaking windows and jumping out. However, nine passengers became trapped inside and died in the blaze.
The double-decker bus was travelling from Noida towards Mahoba via the Yamuna Expressway when the fire broke out.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, fire brigade personnel and police teams from the Jewar police station reached the spot and launched rescue and relief operations.
Several passengers were evacuated safely, while teams worked to bring the situation under control and recover those trapped inside the vehicle.
A preliminary report indicated that the bus was carrying a large quantity of luggage, including baggage loaded on its roof. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the fire, including the possible role of the heavy luggage load.
The exact cause of the fire was not immediately known. Police and fire department teams remained at the spot as rescue and relief operations continued.
The incident has also brought renewed attention to passenger safety and emergency preparedness in long-distance buses, particularly arrangements for evacuation in the event of a fire.
