A couple was allegedly tied to a roadside pole and physically assaulted by a group of locals in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district in an apparent case of moral policing, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place in Chandrakona after locals reportedly caught the 25-year-old woman, who was widowed around three months ago, with another man at her in-laws’ house.
According to police sources, the woman’s husband, a resident of Gosaibazar Jawaharpur under Chandrakona Municipality, had allegedly died by suicide after hanging himself at home. Police had registered a case of unnatural death following his death, though details of the investigation were not immediately known.
Neighbours alleged that the woman had entered into a relationship with another man within days of becoming a widow. The man, reportedly from Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district, had recently connected with her through social media and wanted to meet her. She subsequently asked him to come to her in-laws’ house.
The two were allegedly caught there on Wednesday, following which locals accused the man of having an extramarital relationship and labelled the woman an “adulteress”.
Police said the couple was tied to a roadside pole and lime was smeared on their faces. They were allegedly subjected to further harassment, triggering a commotion in the area.
After receiving information about the disturbance, personnel from Chandrakona police station reached the spot and rescued the couple.
A district police officer said neither the villagers nor the woman’s family had submitted a written complaint. The man and woman also did not file any complaint against those allegedly involved in the assault.
Both were subsequently released, and no one had been detained or arrested in connection with the incident, police said.
