Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani on Thursday made a controversial remark targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid the ongoing political dispute over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying he would have shot the CEC if he were pardoned for one murder.
Sahani was speaking about his allegations concerning the Election Commission of India’s handling of electoral-roll revision. He accused the Commission of undermining the democratic process and alleged that it had become an extension of the BJP.
“What can I do? They are destroying democracy. They are destroying the democracy envisioned by Dr BR Ambedkar. These elections are not for any leader; that is their misunderstanding. Elections are for the citizens,” Sahani said.
He alleged that electoral rolls had been manipulated and cited claims concerning voter deletions in West Bengal and the transfer of Rs 10,000 to beneficiaries during the election period in Bihar. These claims were made by Sahani and are disputed political allegations.
Sahani then directly targeted Gyanesh Kumar, saying, “If I were pardoned for one murder, I would have shot Gyanesh Kumar first.” He also accused the CEC of “playing with the Constitution”.
However, Sahani said he would abide by the Constitution and claimed that Kumar and others would face legal action if a government led by Rahul Gandhi came to power in 2029. His remarks about a future government and possible imprisonment were political assertions, not established outcomes.
The comments came amid reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on at least 14 occasions over a 10-month period concerning electoral-roll procedures and matters linked to the SIR exercise. The reported issues included voter additions, deletions and restorations, changes to Form 6 and the handling of electoral-roll data.
The Election Commission, however, has maintained that decisions on matters including the SIR were taken unanimously with the approval of all three Election Commissioners. The Commission has also said that individual observations made during deliberations do not amount to separate decisions of the body. The ECI’s official website lists Gyanesh Kumar as CEC and Sandhu and Joshi as Election Commissioners.
Sahani also questioned the need to hold elections if, according to his allegations, the electoral process was being manipulated.
The controversy over the SIR and the functioning of the Election Commission remains a matter of political debate, with competing claims about electoral-roll procedures and the Commission’s decision-making process.
