Five people have been detained for questioning in Samastipur after a video purportedly showing the public harassment of a young girl surfaced on social media, prompting police to launch an investigation.
The alleged incident took place on Bandh Bypass Road in Jagatsinghpur village, under Karpurigram police station and a few kilometres from the Samastipur district headquarters.
According to preliminary information, the girl had stopped by the roadside with a male companion to take photographs when a group of youths allegedly surrounded her and misbehaved with her.
The video, which began circulating widely on social media late Wednesday, purportedly shows youths questioning the girl about her identity, verbally abusing her and engaging in inappropriate behaviour. The footage also appears to show an attempt to pull her along the road.
Police said an onlooker is believed to have recorded the incident on a mobile phone before the footage was circulated on social media. After being alerted to the video, Samastipur Police began identifying those seen in it and initiated an investigation.
Two suspects have so far been identified as Vikas Sharma and Rahul Kumar, both residents of Jagatsinghpur village. Five people have been detained from the village and are being questioned in connection with the case. Police said several liquor-related cases are already registered against Sharma.
Samastipur Superintendent of Police Arvind Pratap Singh said officers were examining the roles of all individuals visible in the footage and had been directed to complete the investigation expeditiously and take appropriate legal action against anyone found involved.
Investigators are also verifying the authenticity of the video, establishing the time and location of the alleged incident and tracing the person who recorded it. They are checking whether the footage represents the complete sequence of events or has been edited before being circulated.
Police said the identities and roles of everyone appearing in the video, as well as the exact circumstances and number of people involved, would be established only after the investigation. The detained suspects continue to be questioned while officers gather information from local residents.
The development comes days after a separate incident involving the alleged harassment of a Class 10 girl in Jamui district, also in Bihar.
