The Ministry of Defence has signed a Rs 810.79 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force.
The contract, signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, has been placed under the Buy Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured category.
The SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb designed and developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It can be launched from aircraft including the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30MKI and is designed to engage enemy airfields from long stand-off ranges.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the system will have 60 per cent indigenous content. The contract also provides for the indigenisation of key subsystems, including the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier, supporting the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence.
Deliveries of the SAT-SAAW systems are scheduled to take place during 2027-28 and 2028-29.
The induction of the weapon system is expected to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force and enhance the country’s overall defence preparedness, the ministry said.
SAT-SAAW is designed to strike critical airfield infrastructure, including runways, taxi tracks, reinforced bunkers, aircraft hangars, radar installations, fuel storage facilities and communication infrastructure.
The precision-guided glide bombs enable aircraft to engage targets from stand-off distances, allowing fighter jets to strike targets without entering the effective range of hostile surface-to-air missile systems.
Unlike powered missiles, glide bombs use the momentum of the launch aircraft and aerodynamic lift to reach their targets, eliminating the need for an onboard rocket or jet engine for propulsion.
The weapon is equipped with a high-explosive, pre-fragmented deep-penetration warhead, while satellite navigation enables precision targeting.
