The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated penal action against major e-commerce platforms, including Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket, Amazon, Flipkart India and Zepto, over various regulatory non-compliances.
The food regulator said on Wednesday that the action relates to issues including misbranding, misleading claims and the sale or display of prohibited or poisonous food articles.
In a social media post, FSSAI described the move as a “major crackdown” on e-commerce platforms over regulatory violations. The regulator has stepped up enforcement measures against food business operators and e-commerce companies this year.
Separately, FSSAI has proposed a single-phase rollout of Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling (FoPL), under which packaged food products high in salt, sugar or fat would carry prominent warning labels.
The proposal was submitted through an affidavit before the Supreme Court, which had sought a clear timeline from FSSAI and the government for implementing front-of-pack warning labels.
Under the proposed framework, packaged food products exceeding prescribed thresholds for nutrients of concern would be required to display a red hexagon on a white square background on the front of the package.
The warning is intended to give consumers clear and easily identifiable nutritional information at the point of purchase, enabling them to make informed food choices.
FSSAI said it intends to implement FoPL in a single phase rather than introducing the system in stages. The regulator noted that the proposed warning format draws similarities with the model adopted in Canada and is aimed at highlighting nutrients that may pose health risks when consumed in excess.
