Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi spoke to the family of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode over the phone on Thursday and assured them of his support in their pursuit of justice, Maharashtra Congress said.
According to the state Congress unit, Gandhi expressed solidarity with the family and assured them of all possible assistance in seeking justice for Sahil.
The student’s death has triggered protests on the IIT Bombay campus, with his family levelling serious allegations against the institute administration and certain officials. The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is investigating the case.
The Youth Congress is scheduled to hold a press conference later on Thursday and is expected to announce its strategy and further course of action in connection with the matter.
Meanwhile, regular classes resumed at IIT Bombay on Wednesday, several days after Sahil’s death led to protests on the campus.
The Mumbai Police said on Wednesday that the investigation was being conducted impartially and that all possible angles were being examined. Police also appealed to the public to refrain from circulating misinformation.
Police said a case was initially registered at Powai Police Station following the death of Sahil Ravindra Wakode, 20, and was subsequently transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch as DCB CID C.R. No. 124/2026.
The investigation has been assigned to an Assistant Commissioner of Police-rank officer and is being supervised by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Detection-I, Crime Branch, officials said.
IIT Bombay professor Suryanarayana Doolla, who has been named in the case, was sent on leave amid the investigation, according to sources. Sahil’s parents have demanded his immediate arrest. A case has been registered against Doolla on allegations including abetment to suicide and caste-based discrimination.
Sahil, a second-year B.Tech student in IIT Bombay’s Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was found hanging in his hostel room on the Powai campus on the evening of September 18. The incident occurred hours after he was allegedly caught using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is continuing.
