An Ahmadi Muslim man was seriously injured in a knife attack in Pakistan’s Punjab province, with a minority rights organisation describing the incident as the third reported attack on members of the Ahmadiyya community in the province within a month.
According to Voice of Pakistan Minority (VOPM), Hamid Javed was attacked by an unidentified man with a knife in the Lathianwala area of Faisalabad district on September 21 while he was returning home.
VOPM said the incident came amid continuing reports of violence and intimidation targeting Ahmadis in Pakistan. The organisation said such attacks could not be viewed as isolated incidents because members of the community faced threats and violence linked to their religious identity.
Earlier this week, VOPM had raised concern over what it described as continued targeting of Ahmadis in Pakistan, including incidents involving workplaces, places of worship and homes. The organisation alleged that attackers were being emboldened by a climate of impunity.
The rights body also cited the September 19 shooting of two Ahmadi Muslims, 70-year-old Malik Mahmood Mubarak and his 40-year-old son Ayaz, in Sargodha district. According to VOPM, the two were shot while travelling home and survived the attack. It said no arrests had been reported in the case.
VOPM further said that on September 2, 65-year-old Mirza Safdar Mahmood was killed near the Kot Ahmad Shah area of Mandi Bahauddin while travelling to an Ahmadi place of worship.
The organisation called on Pakistan to protect Ahmadi citizens, ensure prompt investigations into attacks, prosecute those responsible and provide remedies to victims. It also urged a review of laws and administrative measures that it said enable discrimination and incitement, including restrictions involving religious publications.
VOPM said impunity for attacks was not accidental but reflected policy choices, and warned that failure to hold perpetrators accountable could further endanger the community.
The developments come after UN experts recently expressed concern over continuing discrimination, violence and legal restrictions affecting the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Pakistan. They called on Pakistani authorities to ensure the community’s safety and uphold the country’s international human rights commitments.
