The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday accused the BJP-led Central Government of using central agencies to create fear and pressure among government officials in Punjab ahead of elections, following Enforcement Directorate (ED) action involving the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA).
AAP said the timing and nature of the action raised questions, particularly as the Bhagwant Mann Government continues to pursue welfare schemes and development projects across the state.
In a statement, the party alleged that the Centre was attempting to pressure Punjab Government officers because the Bhagwant Mann Government’s work could not be stopped through political means. AAP also alleged that similar agency action and pressure tactics had been witnessed before the Delhi elections.
The party said GMADA plays an important role in the planned development of Mohali and generates resources through development activities. It claimed that creating an atmosphere of fear among its officers could affect the pace of development work and asked the Centre to explain the reasons behind the agency action involving the authority.
AAP maintained that Punjab’s welfare programmes were supported by the people of the state and would continue despite what it described as pressure tactics. The party said the government would continue implementing its commitments to women, families, farmers, youth and other sections.
The party specifically cited the Maavan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna, which it said provides direct financial support to women across Punjab. It also pointed to expanded healthcare services, strengthening of government education, free electricity to households and other welfare measures undertaken by the Mann Government.
AAP said Punjab Government officers should be allowed to discharge their duties without fear and argued that the elected government in Punjab should not be undermined through agency pressure.
The party challenged the BJP to contest the Mann Government’s record through democratic and political means rather than, as alleged by AAP, through central agencies.
AAP reiterated that the government’s welfare and development agenda would continue, asserting that the Maavan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna, other welfare programmes and development works across Punjab would not be halted by the agency action.
