India’s Roshibina Devi secured her third consecutive Asian Games medal on Thursday, but the Wushu star said she now wants to change the colour of the silver she has won at the continental showpiece for the second time in a row.
Competing in the women’s 60kg category at the Aichi Prefectural Martial Arts Hall, Roshibina lost 0-2 to China’s Zhang Xiaoyu in the gold-medal bout. She had also won silver at the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games after losing to China’s Wu Xiaowei.
“I am very happy to win the Wushu medal for the third time for India. I will prepare for more games in the future and look to change the colour of the medal,” Roshibina said after her silver-medal finish.
Her journey to the 2026 Asian Games squad was itself unexpected. Roshibina initially lost the selection trial to Divyanshi Choudhary and missed out on the team. She was subsequently called up as a replacement after Divyanshi withdrew following her medical examinations.
With limited preparation time, Roshibina said Zhang’s longer range proved advantageous in the final.
“I had a short preparation time, and Zhang’s range is also a little longer than mine. So, she took advantage of that. I am preparing to improve and do better than before,” she said.
Roshibina also acknowledged the challenge of returning from injuries and competing against younger athletes.
“It was not easy to win a medal back-to-back. It is not easy to recover from injuries and compete with the youth. It is not easy to compete with them. But I will do better in the future. I want to be ready to compete with them,” she said.
On her way to the final, Roshibina defeated Macao’s Chu Man Sin 5-0 in the quarterfinals before beating Indonesia’s Thania Kusumaningtyas 2-0 in the semifinals.
Roshibina, who comes from a farming family in Kwasiphai in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, trains in the women’s Sanda 60kg category at SAI NCOE Imphal under coach Maibam Premkumar Singh.
She won bronze at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta before upgrading it to silver at Hangzhou in 2023, becoming only the second Indian to win a Wushu silver medal at the Asian Games.
Her achievements have earned her the Arjuna Award and the International Wushu Federation’s Female Wushu Athlete of the Year (Sanda) honour.
