Dismissed Punjab Police AIG Raj Jit Singh Hundal, who had been absconding for more than three years in cases linked to allegations of a police-drug trafficker nexus and corruption, was arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) in Patiala on Thursday.
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav confirmed the arrest, saying that Raj Jit Singh was apprehended by an ANTF team from a house in Darshan Singh Nagar, Patiala, following sustained technical and financial investigation.
The arrest comes days after Raj Jit Singh, through his counsel, expressed willingness before the Supreme Court to surrender. On September 10, the Supreme Court directed him to surrender while hearing his Special Leave Petition seeking transfer of the investigation from Punjab Police to another agency.
Raj Jit Singh had been absconding since April 2023, when the Punjab Government dismissed him from service and initiated action against him following the opening of Special Investigation Team reports concerning allegations of a nexus between police personnel and drug traffickers.
His name had figured prominently in investigations concerning dismissed Punjab Police Inspector Inderjit Singh, who had been arrested in 2017 in a case involving allegations of drug smuggling and other offences.
FIR No. 1 dated June 12, 2017 was originally registered against Inderjit Singh at the then Special Task Force police station in SAS Nagar, Mohali, under various provisions of the NDPS Act, IPC and Arms Act.
A Special Investigation Team constituted following proceedings before the Punjab and Haryana High Court subsequently examined Raj Jit Singh’s alleged association and complicity with Inderjit Singh.
Three reports submitted by the SIT in 2018 remained in sealed covers before the Punjab and Haryana High Court until they were opened in March 2023, following which the state government proceeded to take action.
On April 17, 2023, the Punjab Government dismissed Raj Jit Singh from service. He was then serving as AIG, Headquarters, NRI Wing.
The government also directed the Punjab Police to nominate Raj Jit Singh as an accused in FIR No. 1 of 2017, which had originally been registered against Inderjit Singh, and to conduct further investigation into the role of police officials who may have directly or indirectly facilitated drug trafficking or smuggling.
Raj Jit Singh subsequently faced two more cases in 2023.
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau registered a case against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act over allegations concerning assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
Another case, FIR No. 138 of 2023, was registered by the anti-narcotics authorities under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the NDPS Act in connection with allegations arising out of the investigation.
Raj Jit Singh went underground following the action against him. A Look Out Circular was also issued as police agencies continued efforts to trace him.
The former police officer had served as SSP in various districts before being posted as AIG.
The allegations against Raj Jit Singh and his alleged association with dismissed Inspector Inderjit Singh have also figured extensively in proceedings before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Police are expected to seek Raj Jit Singh’s remand from the competent court for further investigation in the cases registered against him.
