Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has recalled how his marriage to actress-politician Jaya Bachchan was decided almost spontaneously, revealing that the couple did not go through an elaborate process of seeking approval from their families before tying the knot.
Speaking during an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 18, Amitabh was asked by contestant Aheli Roy from Kolkata how he had convinced his mother-in-law and won over Jaya’s family before their marriage.
Recalling the circumstances, Amitabh said he and Jaya simply decided one day that they should get married.
“Humne unko kuch nahi kaha. Humne bas Jaya ji ko ek din bola ki shaadi kar leni chahiye. Toh unhone kaha, haan kar leni chahiye aur bas tay ho gaya,” he said.
He added that neither of them had discussed the matter with their families beforehand. According to Amitabh, Jaya subsequently informed her parents, although he said he did not know what she told them to secure their consent.
“Shaadi tay hone ke baad Jaya ji gayi, apne mata-pita ko bataya hoga. Humein yeh bhi maloom nahi unhone kya bola hoga, lekin woh log maan gaye aur aa gaye. Phir thodi baatein hui aur agle din shaadi kar li,” he recalled.
Amitabh also contrasted their simple wedding with the elaborate planning that often surrounds weddings today. He joked about the extensive preparations involving dates, clothes, travel and celebrations, saying he preferred the simplicity of their approach.
“Sach bolun toh aisa hi hona chahiye, hai na? Kaun uss jhamela mein jaaye ki yeh taarikh hogi, yeh kapde pehnenge, idhar jaayenge, udhar jaayenge, yeh sab karenge, band-vand bajega. Iska kuch faayda nahi,” he said.
The actor added that, for him, accepting Jaya as his wife was what mattered most.
Amitabh and Jaya married on June 3, 1973, after their relationship developed while working together in films. Their wedding followed the success of Zanjeer, after which they had planned a trip to London with friends.
Amitabh has previously recalled that his father, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, told him that if he wanted to travel with Jaya, the two should get married first. Jaya later said that their wedding had originally been planned for October but was brought forward to take place just days before their London trip.
The couple subsequently worked together in films including Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Mili and Sholay, besides Zanjeer.
Amitabh and Jaya went on to have two children, daughter Shweta Bachchan Nanda and son Abhishek Bachchan.
