Eleven people were killed and three others injured after three gunmen opened fire on a group inside a house in KwaMakhutha township in South Africa’s southeastern KwaZulu-Natal province, police said on Wednesday.
The shooting took place on Tuesday night in the Ziko area, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal.
Police said three men arrived at the house and opened fire on 13 men and a woman, who was believed to be pregnant, while they were attending a party.
Ten people, including the woman, died at the scene. Four others were taken to hospital, where one of the injured later succumbed to gunshot wounds, taking the death toll to 11.
SAPS Acting National Commissioner Puleng Dimpane has ordered the immediate activation of a 72-hour tracking operation to locate and arrest the suspects.
“Police must act decisively, mobilise all available resources and pursue those responsible until they are brought before the courts,” Dimpane said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations have indicated that some of the victims were on the radar of the SAPS Crime Intelligence Division in connection with alleged illegal activities. Police did not provide further details and said the motive for the shooting had not yet been established.
The latest incident comes amid other shooting incidents reported in KwaZulu-Natal. In April, two people were killed in a shooting in Durban’s Overport area.
Emergency services had responded to the incident on Crescent Street near East Street Park, where a man believed to be in his 30s was found with multiple gunshot wounds. A second victim later died after being taken to hospital, according to emergency services.
Multiple bullet casings were recovered from the roadway, while a passing motorist’s vehicle was also damaged during the shooting.
