Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each person killed in the Greater Noida double-decker bus fire, while Rs 50,000 will be provided to each injured person.
Nine passengers, including a woman, were killed after the bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, with several others sustaining serious injuries.
Expressing grief over the incident, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said on X that Modi was “distressed to hear about the loss of lives” in the bus fire and extended condolences to the families of those who died. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath separately announced the same ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of each deceased person and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
According to officials, the double-decker bus was travelling from Kashmiri Gate in New Delhi to Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh when it suddenly caught fire near the 33-km milestone on the Yamuna Expressway, falling under the jurisdiction of Jewar Police Station.
More than 30 passengers were reportedly on board. As the flames spread rapidly, several passengers jumped from the windows in an attempt to escape. Nine people were trapped inside the bus and died in the blaze.
Senior police officials, along with local police personnel, a rescue tender and a fire tender stationed at the Jewar Toll Plaza, reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. Four additional fire tenders and a fire service unit were also deployed, and the blaze was subsequently brought under control.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a spark or blast in the bus’s air-conditioning system may have triggered the fire, which then ignited lubricating oil in the engine and caused the flames to spread rapidly.
Police have taken the driver and conductor into custody and registered a case under relevant sections. Officials said further legal proceedings are underway as the investigation continues.
