India’s U-19 World Cup-winning captain Ayush Mhatre has been named vice-captain of Mumbai for their Ranji Trophy season-opener against Chandigarh, beginning October 11 at the Wankhede Stadium.
In a notable selection decision, Suryakumar Yadav has been left out of the squad despite making himself available for the match, with the selectors opting to give greater emphasis to youth for the opening red-ball fixture.
The squad was finalised after a meeting led by chief selector Rajesh Pawar, which was attended by captain Siddhesh Lad, head coach Omkar Salvi and cricket advisor and former India chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar.
Mumbai will also be without seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur, who sustained a fracture to his right middle finger during training and is expected to miss at least the first two matches.
India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been included in the squad, giving him an opportunity for red-ball match practice ahead of India’s Test series against New Zealand in November.
Mhatre returns after missing almost five months because of a hamstring injury suffered during IPL 2026 while playing for Chennai Super Kings. He and Lad recently cleared their fitness tests at the BKC indoor facility and subsequently featured in the Kanga League to demonstrate their match readiness.
Opener Divyaansh Saxena has also returned to Mumbai’s Ranji squad after impressing in the pre-season competitions. Saxena was Jaiswal’s teammate in India’s 2020 Men’s U-19 World Cup campaign in South Africa.
Four-time defending? Mumbai, the 42-time Ranji Trophy champions, will compete in Elite Group D alongside Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Railways, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
Mumbai squad: Siddhesh Lad (captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ayush Mhatre (vice-captain), Divyaansh Saxena, Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz Khan, Suved Parkar, Aakash Anand (wicketkeeper), Hardik Tamore (wicketkeeper), Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Atharva Ankolekar, Tushar Deshpande, Mohit Avasthi, Sylvester Dsouza and Onkar Tarmale.
