Delhi batter and Punjab Kings opener Priyansh Arya says batting alongside Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been a rewarding experience, with the youngster’s aggressive strokeplay helping take pressure off his opening partner.
Priyansh, who has impressed in the last two Indian Premier League seasons and scored a century for India A against Australia A last year, is continuing to push for higher honours. He will feature in India A’s one-day series against Australia A, beginning Tuesday.
The batter said competition among India’s emerging and established openers remains healthy, with Priyansh having shared the crease with Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh.
“It’s quite chill between all of us because we only focus on performance. The better you perform, the higher you go in the pecking order,” Priyansh told the media in Delhi.
“I’ve batted with Prabhsimran, Abhishek and Vaibhav, and have learnt something from each of them,” he added.
Priyansh said he also closely observes the three batters during training and tries to incorporate elements of their approach into his own game.
“I’ve played with all of them at one level or the other, and I always watch them while they’re training. I try to incorporate some of their methods into my game so I can benefit from them. I like their batting style and intent,” he said.
The Delhi batter particularly enjoys opening with Sooryavanshi, whose attacking approach can force opponents onto the defensive.
“For instance, I enjoy playing with Vaibhav because he takes pressure off you by scoring big runs. When he bats, the opposition even starts bowling defensively. This makes batting easier for his partners as well,” Priyansh said.
“There’s great joy in watching Vaibhav bat from the non-striker’s end. I just tell him, ‘If you’re hitting well, just keep hitting,’” he added.
Priyansh and Sooryavanshi have also opened together for India A in the one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka, which featured Afghanistan A. They shared a 75-run partnership against Afghanistan A before putting together 132 in the final against Sri Lanka A, playing a key role in India A’s title-winning performance.
However, Priyansh said his strongest bond is with Prabhsimran, his Punjab Kings teammate.
“I have the best bond with Prabh bhai. He has been playing in the IPL for the last seven or eight years, and is a lot more experienced than me,” he said.
Priyansh added that Prabhsimran helps him understand bowlers and plan his approach during innings.
“If a left-arm spinner comes on in the powerplay, it’s me who targets him; while if an off-spinner comes on, it’s him. So we try to communicate with each other as best as possible, and target different bowlers,” he said.
