The Congress on Tuesday said the INDIA bloc’s protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is focused on demanding his resignation, cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the use of ballot papers for elections.
Congress MP Imran Masood alleged that Kumar had undermined public trust in the Election Commission as an independent and impartial institution.
“The CEC should resign. Gyanesh Kumar has broken the trust that the Election Commission had earned as an independent and impartial institution in the country,” Masood said.
Asked about the decision of the AAP, DMK and BJD to stay away from the protest, Masood said parties supporting Rahul Gandhi would participate in the campaign.
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat said the INDIA bloc’s protest was aimed at opposing the SIR exercise and seeking Kumar’s resignation.
“Today, all the INDIA bloc parties are protesting from Makar Dwar. The purpose behind this is, first, that Gyanesh Kumar should resign, and the SIR should be cancelled. Elections should then be held using ballot papers because fair elections are not taking place,” Bhagat said.
Congress MP Karamvir Singh Boudh alleged that some people holding constitutional positions were misusing their authority and affecting citizens’ voting rights.
He claimed that people across the country believed legitimate votes had been deleted during the SIR exercise, while incorrect entries were being rectified.
Meanwhile, Opposition INDIA bloc MPs are scheduled to march from Parliament to the Election Commission of India headquarters in New Delhi over allegations of “vote theft” linked to the revision of electoral rolls.
The protest follows a meeting of 19 Opposition parties on September 30 and comes amid a broader campaign by INDIA bloc leaders against the Election Commission over the SIR exercise.
Opposition leaders are also expected to meet President Droupadi Murmu to raise their concerns regarding the electoral roll revision.
The allegations made by the Congress and other Opposition parties are political claims and have not been established as findings against the Election Commission or the CEC.
