The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Kerala Police has summoned Hassan Warris and Nikhil, two close aides of CPI(M) MLA and former Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas, for questioning in connection with the CMRL-Exalogic case.
The notices mark the first major step by the SIT after the Kerala government authorised the police to proceed with an investigation based on findings and allegations raised by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Both Warris and Nikhil had earlier been questioned by the ED during its probe into financial transactions linked to the case. Their questioning by the SIT is expected to focus on transactions and alleged financial dealings flagged in the ED findings.
The development follows the ED’s direction to State Police Chief Ravada A. Chandrasekhar to register a case and investigate alleged violations under the Prevention of Corruption Act and other relevant laws.
The state government had initially sought legal advice on whether a police case could be registered on the basis of the ED’s findings. After receiving the necessary legal clearance, the V.D. Satheesan-led UDF government gave the State Police Chief approval to proceed with the investigation.
The case has significant political implications as it involves allegations concerning individuals associated with Riyas, the son-in-law of former Kerala Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan. Riyas is married to Vijayan’s daughter T. Veena, who owned Exalogic Solutions, the now-defunct IT company.
The ED investigation examined alleged financial transactions involving Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL), Exalogic Solutions and individuals associated with the entities. The agency had raised allegations of financial irregularities and suspected movement of funds.
The SIT’s questioning of Warris and Nikhil could be followed by the examination of other persons referred to in the ED findings. However, any allegations against individuals remain subject to investigation and have not been established by a court.
